Storm Copper Now Offers Electroless Nickel Plating Process

The metal finishing industry is facing a greater challenge to reduce the environmental impact of its products and processes than ever before. Through continuous improvement initiatives and a commitment to the environment, Storm Copper Components, Co. today announced that has introduced Medium Phosphorus Electroless Nickel Plating to its portfolio of production processes.

Electroless Nickel (EN) is a chemical plating process in which nickel is deposited on the surface of metal without the use of electrical energy. EN allows a constant metal ion concentration to bathe all parts of the object; it deposits metal evenly along edges, inside holes, and over irregularly shaped objects, which are difficult to plate evenly with electroplating.  The result is a dense, glass-like surface that maintains lubricity between the original metal component and the plated service.

Storm Copper’s Medium Phosphorus Electroless Nickel Plating process is completely free of chrome,  lead, and cadmium, eliminating related health and environmental hazards with elements. The application, which requires a two- to three-week lead time, can accept jobs up to 78 inches, requires no minimum parts quantities, and has zero setup fees.  “Our bulk plating process allows customers to benefit from additional flexibility for their plating needs, is perfect for prototype parts, and offers cost efficiencies,” said Carol Howard, president & chief operating officer of Storm Copper.

Due to its exceptional corrosion resistance and high hardness, the process—which is quite versatile—can be applied widely, from aerospace to oil and gas equipment, to enhance the life of components exposed to severe conditions. EN uses less nickel and offers distinct advantages over 'electrolytic' processes in an engineering environment when plating irregularly shaped objects, holes, recesses, internal surfaces, valves or threaded parts.  Additional benefits include:
